Everything You Need to Know About Edibles & More
Make the most of your edible experience with our help.
Smoking has long been the most popular way to consume cannabis, but edibles are rapidly gaining traction.
The wide availability of great-tasting, well-made cannabis edibles is a boon to cannabis consumers who don’t want to smoke. There are tons of different edible options on the market now, as well as a variety of form factors and uses for cannabis consumers of all kinds.
Why Are People Turning Towards Edibles?
Until recently, most users consumed cannabis by smoking. Smoking is fast, convenient, and provides an instant effect.
However, smoking damages the lungs. It creates a pungent smell that penetrates furniture and clothing. Its effects only last an hour or two – prompting the need to smoke more frequently.
Edibles, on the other hand, have not been shown to damage internal organs. Once prepared, they smell like regular baked goods, cookies, or gummies. Additionally, they offer longer-lasting effects thanks to the slower nature of digestive metabolism.
It should come as no surprise that the average dispensary is chock full of edible cannabis products. These products can be intimidating to consumers who may not immediately know what a proper dose should be.
Pay Attention to Edible Dosages
Cannabis edibles allow people to easily consume a precise dosage of cannabis. But that also means that it’s much easier to eat too much in a single sitting.
While there is no significant long-term danger to “overdosing” on cannabis, eating too much is not a pleasant experience. Just look at the New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd’s infamous experience with cannabis chocolate. The cannabis community had itself a good laugh at her expense, but hers is a mistake anyone could make – particularly in the days before clearly printed dosage instructions became state law.
Now, most states require edible manufacturers to print dosage instructions on every package. Some states specify exactly how much THC a single “dose” should contain. Be sure to read this information before consuming any edible cannabis products – it’s important!
5 Types of Edible Cannabis Products and Typical Dosages
Some of the most common types of edible cannabis products include:
- Tinctures. Tinctures are small glass vials of pure THC saturated in alcohol. They are usually weighted so that a single drop contains a dose.
- Gummies. Cannabis gummies are made from gelatin, sugar, and other flavors. They are typically weighted so that a single gummy contains one dose.
- Candies. Candies are typically sealed in “fun-size” packages and weighted so that a single piece contains a single dose.
- Chocolates. Unlike candies and other edibles, chocolates can contain as many as 16 doses or more. This was the case for Maureen Dowd’s Hershey’s-style chocolate bar edible, where every square of chocolate (on a 4×4 grid) contained a single dose each.
- Lubes & Sex Creams. These products lie at the intersection of edibles and topicals. They are meant to be used on the skin (and other parts of the anatomy), but they also adhere to stringent food safety requirements. There is no “typical” dosage for these products, so be sure to read the label!
What’s the Best Cannabis Product for Me?
It takes experience to answer this question. Take some time to try out different cannabis edibles and find out what the best product format for you is. Go slow and steady when it comes to dosage, and you’re sure to find a product that meets your needs to the letter.
